In the autumn when the leaves in your freshly raked pile suddenly fly away you are seeing wind energy in its purest form. Most of the time people take for granted that the wind is a form of energy - kinetic energy.

How do we capture that kinetic energy and transform it into electrical energy and how does wind power work to power homes and even towns?

Wind power can be used as two forms of energy, mechanical and electrical. Windmills are an example of mechanical energy, so is a sail boat being pushed by the wind. In both cases the winds kinetic energy doesn't have to be transformed, it is used in its pure state.

Mechanical energy from the wind is seen in wind powered electric turbines that generate power for homes, towns, or for sale to power companies.

The wind energy here must be transformed from its natural state to an electrical state usable by normal electrical outlets.

Wind turbines come in two designs: the horizontal-axis which looks like a propeller and the vertical-axis which resembles egg beaters. The horizontal design is the one most commonly in use today.

Components of the Wind Turbine

*The blades (rotor) - this converts the energy from the wind into energy for the shaft;

*An enclosure which contains the drive train and generator;

*The tower;

*All the electronics and connecting equipment.

Pulling it all Together

To get the energy from the wind to turn your television on and off there are a series of steps involved. To the naked eye all that is seen are the blades on the windmill turning. The magic is on the inside.

When the wind blows, the kinetic energy turns the blades which are attached to a hub. The turning blades cause the shaft inside the enclosure turn. The rotation speed is increased by the generator. The generator then uses a magnetic field to convert this rotating energy into electricity.

At this point you have electricity however; it still needs to be converted to a usable voltage system. Once the generator makes the electricity it sends it out to a converter to prepare it for distribution to the grid.

In order for wind energy to be usable by many people there needs to be a large amount made. This is where wind farms come in. Many wind turbines are tied together to produce mass amount of electricity.

This electricity can be supplied to the grid as long as there is wind to generate it. When there is not enough wind, the power grid must step in and take over. Conversely, when the wind generator produces a surplus of electricity the utility companies are able to purchase it or back off in their electricity production.

If Not Wind Power, Why Not Tidal Power?

Tidal Power - Why It's Different Than Any Other Energy Source

You can't spend any amount of time by an ocean without noting the power of the coming and going of the tides. But what is the source of this tidal power? Where does the energy to move all that water come from?

Tidal Power is unique because gravitational force, not radiant energy from the sun is its source. The only other energy sources currently available that don't ultimate originate from the sun are battery power and nuclear power.

If you consider it for a moment you'll realize that's true.

Plants require sunlight to grow. Sunlight drives photosynthesis. Our growth and development and the energy our bodies require comes from our food, all of which depends on sunlight (we either eat the plants directly or indirectly when we eat the animal that ate the plants).

Wood was probably the earliest fuel, and that clearly derives from the sun. But coal and oil are also vegetative matter, just transformed by time and pressure into their current form.

The connection of wind energy and hydro energy to the sun is less obvious but just as strong.

The sun warming areas of the planet differently causes air masses to move as wind. And it's the sun's energy that evaporates the water that eventually falls as rain the fill the rivers and streams from which we harness hydropower.

Tidal power originates from an entirely different source. The pull of gravity causes tides.

The earth continually turns on its axis. As it does, different areas of the globe are closest to the moon. The area closest feels a stronger gravitational pull, and over the oceans this difference is strong enough to pull the water slightly closer to the moon. About 1 meter closer.

As the earth's rotation continues this bump of water moves across the ocean more or less like a single large wave. When it reaches the shoreline, it causes the increase in water level that we recognize as a rising tide.

The conditions close to shore determine how much of a change in water level we see on any particular shoreline.

All of that water in motion represents a tremendous amount of energy. The ideas of harnessing has always been tantalizing, and is even more intriguing in this days of decreasing oil reserves and increasing concerns about the environment.

Solar Energy

They both use some type of solar panels to harness the energy. Solar thermal is energy taken from the heat of the sun, which is then used as heat for water and space heating. Photovoltaic energy is taken from the sun's light and is used to create electricity. It uses solar cells, often in conjunction with solar panels, to capture the energy. These two sources of alternative energy are not the only ones available. They are, however, frequently used, and are always being experimented with to create better sources and uses for them. Who knows, maybe in twenty years they will be the main source of energy for our planet.

One might think, well that shouldn't be that difficult. The turbine needs to be situated where there is a constant and steady wind most of the time, but it also demands to be based in a place where quite a few turbines can be located. Localities can derive a nice chunk of their power from the wind turbines which diminishes the need to use coal ,oil or gas power as in other places.

On an individual basis,even if you don't live in a windy area, you can still supplement your current electricity supply by employing inexhaustible wind energy. The best part is by using do-it-yourself guides; even the least skilled handymen can build their own windmills and start using inexhaustible wind energy to lower their electricity bills each month. However, if you do live in a especially windy area you can feasibly generate an abundance of electricity from renewable wind energy systems.

Smaller wind systems are being used to generate on-site power and provide additional power to local utilities, and the market is expanding at over 20 percent annually. However, wind power represents more than just competitive electricity. It offers: rural economic profits from project development; a hedge against changeable natural gas prices and planned use of imported liquid natural gas; cost-effective clean air compliance option for businesses and communities; strong future partner for other domestic power industries including coal and nuclear; and a inexhaustible option for producing hydrogen for transportation fuels. Wind energy is a homegrown energy source that can contribute to national energy security by shrinking a countries dependence on oil and natural gas-most of which are imported from other countries. In addition, unlike most other electricity sources, wind turbines don't consume water.

Construct It But Not Near Me

The unique problem of people not desiring to look up at or listen to wind turbines all day every day has become a bit of an issue. Where the issue is likely to be decided is in more urban areas where the use of wind turbines is just commencing to creep in. As vocal suburbanites hear about suggested turbine wind farms they all-of-a-sudden decide they are fine with wind power but don't want to look at multiple turbines within their sight on a mountain top, coastal shoreline or in their virtual back yard.

People may become vocal about not desiring to see or hear wind turbines on a daily basis but they need to picture that alternative power sources are here to stay. They had better think hard about their needs and how they are going to come to terms with the issue on a personal basis. Power up with solar, wind, water or nuclear because preferring a source sooner rather than later may be the best way to go. It is definitely worthwhile to learn more about inexhaustible wind energy.
